I think we have all experienced loneliness and the need for someone to witness the challenges we face at one time in our life. In the witnessing, we can provide the gift of listening, not giving of advice, but rather the gift of being present and open-hearted compassionate listening.
Here is my story:
It was early in the morning, which meant there were very few people in the store. As Nancy and I stood in one place trying to decide what we were going to do, a gentleman approached us. He began asking questions about me, and what I did for Nancy. Though it became clear quite quickly that he just needed to talk to someone and have them listen.
Isolation and loneliness can carve a hole in our heart and soul. It can also lead to depression or loss of oneself.
You could see this occurrence in his body and feel it in the tone of his voice. It was like he was grasping for something to anchor him, or something that would allow him to be comfortable with himself and his immediate challenge.
I could feel Nancy shift her body, not to bring the conversation to a close, but rather to encourage him to dig deeper and keep talking. I too felt myself soften and open my heart more widely for this man.
He was a good man, but for whatever reason he needed to have someone in his life right now just listen.
We must have stood there for 20 minutes or even a ½ hour. Near the end, I could see he was breathing deeper as a smile or two shot across his face. Then suddenly he stopped and said, “Thank you for listening, I hope you have a good day”, and walked away.
It was just a short amount of time out of our day, but I could feel what we had done made a difference.
So, I ask you, can you show up for another human or animal? Can you just listen to them? Do you think that such a simple act of compassion could make a positive difference in their life and possibly the world?
I think the world needs a lot more love and compassion to weather our current global chaos and fear. What do you think?
If you agree, but need some help visualizing you listening to another and making a positive difference in the world, I suggest you explore the I Create What I Believe (ICWIB) program where my friend Luke will demonstrate the ICWIB activities and/or attend the FREE Drawing in the Now classes that are taught by Nancy Marie over Zoom the first and third Monday of the month from 4:30 pm-5:00 pm PST.

In a recent interview Dr. Bruce Lipton said, “…Freedom is the ability to create without the limitation of generational programming. The I Create What I Believe! (ICWIB!) Program is a gateway and a pathway into a new and better future because it allows children and (adults) to fully express themselves and to not be limited by the beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation. This program also frees up children’s and (adults’) minds and allows their creative nature to create a better world for all of us, which is what we need right now!”
