When I was going through my training to be a Medical Alert Dog for Nancy we lived in Southern Oregon. Several miles out of town and at a higher elevation was Lake of the Woods. It was a beautiful lake and because of the higher elevation it was much cooler in the summer.
Nancy and I would retreat to the lake often in the hot summer months. Sometimes Nancy would bring her bike and when that happened, I would run next to her on the trail. Though the real highlight was swimming in the lake because the water was pristine and a welcome relief from the heat.
To get to the lake, we needed to drive about 5 miles through open grazing land for cattle. Now one day, as we rounded a corner a huge black steer leaped from the shaded trench alongside of the road and plowed right into our car. Now you need to know, that Nancy did not hit the steer. Instead, the steer charged into the side of our car and as Nancy said T-Boned us.
The steer hit us so hard that it dented the side of the car, spun it around and then swung the car back around, so the steer’s head hit Nancy’s bike on the back of the car. The car wheel well was bent, and the bike frame was twisted beyond repair. Both Nancy and I were thrown around in the incident. Luckily, I travel in a soft crate, so I was just bounced around in the crate instead of being thrown into the front seat or worse.
At the time we were about a mile away from the lake, so Nancy decided to continue to the lake and hopefully get someone to help bend the side of the car, so it wasn’t pushing against the tire. After that we decided to take a swim since Nancy’s bike wasn’t ridable.
So why am I telling you this story?
I am telling you this story because it is a good reminder of how we respond can create a different outcome. Nancy thought it was funny that she was T-Boned by a big black steer. From the beginning she was laughing and enjoying the people at Lake of the Woods that were helping us out. She was in the moment and in that moment, we were happy, open, and able to enjoy the beauty of the lake and its caretakers.
Random incidents can happen to any of us anytime or anywhere. How we respond to those incidents can decide who we are tomorrow.
So how can we insure a good outcome from random and unexpected incidents? I think the best way to start is to step away from fear, be in the moment and look for the humor or the blessing. Also remember laughter can make it easier to maneuver difficult situations and you are not alone.
So, if you would like some help finding the humor in the situation and shifting your perceptions so you can move out of fear and into the moment, I suggest you explore the I Create What I Believe (ICWIB) program where my friend Luke will demonstrate the ICWIB activities and/or attend the FREE Drawing in the Now classes that are taught by Nancy Marie over Zoom the first and third Monday of the month from 4:30 pm-5:00 pm PST.

In a recent interview Dr. Bruce Lipton said, “…Freedom is the ability to create without the limitation of generational programming. The I Create What I Believe! (ICWIB!) Program is a gateway and a pathway into a new and better future because it allows children and (adults) to fully express themselves and to not be limited by the beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation. This program also frees up children’s and (adults’) minds and allows their creative nature to create a better world for all of us, which is what we need right now!”
