For those who haven’t been following my column my owner, Nancy Marie, has Addison’s Disease. This means that her body doesn’t make the hormone necessary for her body to handle stress. This also means she needs to administer it manually. Her doctor had suggested she get a Medical Alert dog to help her manage her condition.
So, what do I do? How do I help?
When I was in training, the trainer told Nancy to not take her medication one day and when she felt her body dropping into an Addison’s Crisis to swab her mouth with a Q-tip and put it in a Ziplock bag and put it in the freezer when she hit 5 out of 10. They would tell her when they needed it.
Then through a series of games and tests they taught me to alert her when I smelled that specific smell. Often Nancy can detect when her body needs more of the medication, but then there are the times where she is so stressed or stretched that she needs me to alert her to what is happening in her body. This morning was one of those moments.
It was about 7:00 am and we were in the San Francisco Airport waiting for our flight. Nancy decided to go to the bathroom. So, we stepped away from the crowd and entered the bathroom. As we exited the bathroom, I got a strong whiff of a familiar smell coming off Nancy’s body.
It was the smell I had been trained to alert her whenever I smelled it. It was the smell that indicated that her Adrenals were crashing, and she was in the beginning stage of an Addison’s Crisis.
I immediately gave her the sign, but she didn’t respond. It was understandable that her adrenals were strained because of her lack of sleep and having to be at the airport at such an early hour. I gave her the sign again, but she still didn’t respond.
Then I gave her the sign a third time, and she immediately said, “No way! My levels are never low in the morning.” I didn’t move and instead repeated the sign again. Finally, she said, “Okay, I will take more of the meds. She then reached into her pocket where she carried the hormone, she needed to take to stay alive. As she opened the pill box she gasped and said, “In all of the commotion this morning I forgot to take my morning dose.” “You just saved my life!” I didn’t respond but stood steady in my observation and belief with a small smile.
With that she immediately dropped to her knees, so she was the same height I was and looked into my eyes with tears streaming down her face. “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! She kept repeating over, and over again while she petted my head and drew me closer in a big hug.
We sat there for a while. When the smell had finally gone away, I indicated that we could go, and wait to board our plane. She was still a bit weak and wobbly, but the smell had subsided, so I felt it was safe to board the plane and fly to the East Coast.
Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to stand up for something or someone that others did not see? How can you trust and believe in yourself enough so you can remain clear in those challenging situations?
If you would like some help remembering how to trust yourself and stand your ground in challenging situations,

In a recent interview Dr. Bruce Lipton said, “…Freedom is the ability to create without the limitation of generational programming. The I Create What I Believe! (ICWIB!) Program is a gateway and a pathway into a new and better future because it allows children and (adults) to fully express themselves and to not be limited by the beliefs that have been passed down from generation to generation. This program also frees up children’s and (adults’) minds and allows their creative nature to create a better world for all of us, which is what we need right now!”
