One day as Nancy and I headed into Whole Foods to get some lunch we saw a man roll into the parking lot wearing flashy biking clothes and was riding a very expensive bike. He was just getting off his bike and beginning the process of chaining his bike for security as we entered the store.
We weren’t in the store long, but when we exited Nancy stopped frozen, because the originally image of the man on the expensive bike was in the process of transforming himself into a street beggar with torn clothes, a can for money and a sign asking for help.
We stood there in shock for quite a while trying to grasp the reality before our eyes.
The increased homeless situation had been pulling on both of our hearts and had brought about a lot of reflection, but as we stood there in silence Nancy said, “I have never really conceived that some of these people were scammers.”
She continued, talking about her father and the people asking for money he encountered on his way to work in Chicago. His solution had been to say, “Let me buy you a cup of coffee and a donut,” because he didn’t want his money to go to alcohol or drugs.
This was different! This obviously well to do person was pretending to be something he wasn’t and was asking innocent people to fund his lie.
Nancy was outraged but continued to stand there in silence. Finally, she said, “I think this is important to share with others, so they aren’t scammed into supporting lies instead of thinking they are supporting someone’s difficult situation. This is a time to look at the current homeless condition and ask what we can do to resolve the situation. Previously Nancy had walked up to people and asked them about their situation and how it was created. She never judged or blamed anyone. She just wanted to connect and understand.
This day Nancy chose to walk up to the man and ask him what he was doing. He was stunned and speechless. Nancy continued telling him that she had seen him ride up on a fancy bike and then transform himself into a beggar so he could scam others out of money. She also told him that she had taken pictures of his process and intended to turn them over to the police so if he ever returned to this lie, they would have evidence of previous impersonations.
The man was speechless and a bit embarrassed. He removed his beggar clothes, got on his bike and rode away. Nancy exhaled. Then we took our food to a nearby park and ate our lunch in silence.
