Do you know that the celebration of New Year’s Day on January 1 is a human-made creation or a civil event? This is because it is not precisely fixed to any natural or seasonal marker. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, where daylight recently ebbed to its lowest point and the days are starting to get longer again, there is a feeling of rebirth in the air.
So where does the New Year’s Day concept come from?
It stems from an ancient Roman custom, the feast of the Roman god Janus. He was the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways, passages, frames, and endings. Janus was also depicted as having two opposite faces. One face looked back into the past, and the other peered forward to the future.
So, what does that mean to you? Is there something you need to know or do?
To celebrate the new year, the Romans made promises to Janus. The tradition of New Year’s resolutions stems from this ancient custom.
Do you follow that tradition? Do you like to look forward into the new year and hold an image of what you would like to transpire then. If you do, is it a personal change or something more connected to your community?
Personally, I like to lay by the fireplace and think about all that has transpired in this closing year and sometimes even the previous years with a note of appreciation for all the humans and animals that have been part of my life.
Being a medical alert dog is a very challenging job and I don’t think I could do it as well as I have without their love and support. So, for me New Year’s Day is a day of reflection, gratitude, and thanks, not a day of projection or looking forward. This is a time where I am thankful for what I have, not what I might get. This is a time of love, gratefulness, and contentment with myself and my life.
If you want some support in finding a way to help you get clear on what New Year’s Day means to you, I suggest you explore the I Create What I Believe (ICWIB) program where my friend Luke will demonstrate the ICWIB activities and/or attend the FREE Drawing in the Now classes that are taught by Nancy Marie over Zoom the first and third Monday of the month from 4:30 pm-5:00 pm PST.
